Celebration, Florida is an unincorporated city located in northwest Osceola County. It is the
master planned, 4,900 acres community created by the real estate development division of The Walt Disney Company. Located just 5 miles outside of the Disney World gates, the community was modeled after small American towns and neighborhoods of the early 1900s, designed by postmodernist architect Robert A.M. Stern and Jaquelin Robertson. The total investment for the project was estimated at US$2.5 billion. "Successfully combining education, health, community, technology and architecture into a community with a strong sense of self, these world-renowned architects designed Celebration to be a the new and exciting place to live, work and play."
Established in 1994, with the first residents moving in during the summer of 1996, Celebration has often been called an example of New Urbanism or neo-traditional town design. Creating a walkable neighborhood with shops, businesses, schools, theaters, green spaces and other important elements and services being the main priority of the development. Also using earth-friendly architecture, energy conservation along with historic preservation and accessibility were of importance. In 2001, Celebration was named the "New Community of the Year" by the Urban Land Institute.
Offering a broad mix of residential options, Celebration has everything from apartments, condos, and townhomes to spacious, sprawling million dollar estates. The architecture blends traditional, Southeastern exteriors with floor plans designed to accommodate the modern lifestyle and tastes. With developers checking out the most picturesque southern towns of New Orleans, Savannah and Charleston, they borrowed the best from them, making sure that Celebration had a town square and the homes had verandahs, gables and front porches.
