Lake Mary, also known as the City of Lakes, is located in Seminole County, Florida and has an estimated population of 14,807. The city started out as 2 small settlements located along the railroad that connected Orlando to the northern community of Sanford. Considered a agriculture and citrus based area, Lake Mary has grown into a city, just 18 miles north of downtown Orlando, with many upscale residential communities, Although it did not become incorporated until 1973, its Chamber of Commerce was established in 1923.
Priding itself on a strong sense of community, Lake Mary has been listed in Money Magazine's "Best Places to Live" listing of America's best small towns multiple times since the survey began in 2005, topping out at #4 2007. Also rated by CNN/Money Magazine's as the #1 "Small Town in Florida to Live" and one of "Top 10 Best Towns for Families" by Family Circle Magazine. Still one of the fastest growing area in Central Florida, Lake Mary boasts on its notable prestigious, upscale, residential communities, its strong, high-tech industrial park and an influential lifestyle that includes excellent school and plenty of family friendly activities.
Being along the Interstate 4 corridor of Orlando, Lake Mary has developed into "the Little Silicon Valley," being home to many national and international firms including Mitsubishi Motors, AT&T and Chase, along with an industrial park of computer software companies. With an estimated median income of $71,376, this area offers many possibilities for employment. With top employers like Convergys, Fiserv, The Bank of New York Mellon, AIG and Symantec all having offices in the area. The American Automobile Association (AAA) has their national office in Lake Mary and is one of the area's largest business employers. Creating opportunities on
a smaller scale is the book fair division of the Scholastic Corporation, Scholastic Book Fairs, is headquartered in Lake Mary. In addition, Dixon Ticonderoga, one of the world's largest producers of pencils, has its main headquarters here.
On any weekday, their town of under 15,000 raises to more than 35,000 as commuters arrive. So in keeping up with the times, Greater Orlando opened a commuter rail, the SunRail, which opened a station in Lake Mary on May 1st, 21014. It is currently is the northernmost SunRail station and serves commuters to downtown and as far south as Sand Lake Road and the Pine Castle area. SunRail has a Phase 2 planned and is expected to open by 2017. It will extend the system north to DeLand Amtrak station and south to Poinciana, making this metro area very accessible.
With a resident population where 70.8% are married and 38.4% have children under the age of 18 living with them, family is an important value to the Lake Mary community. Along with family comes the importance of excellent educational facilities, Seminole County School District, with its "A" rating, serves these students. Recognized for creating well-rounded students, the elementary, middle and high schools of Lake Mary furnish a challenging curriculum, while producing an enriched learning environment, as well as providing a superior student-teacher ratio. Living up to its motto of "Building Success for Every Student," Seminole County Schools works as a partnership with parents, teachers, the administration and local businesses making sure that every pupil succeeds. With a 94% graduation rate from high school and 58% of those continuing their education and receiving their Bachelor's Degree and 38% obtaining a Masters Degree, it verifies why Newsweek Magazine ranked Lake Mary High School #248 of "America's Best High Schools" in 2007. There is also a highly accredited college preparatory school that serves the area, Lake Mary Preparatory School.
There are numerous leisure and entertainment venues in the Lake Mary area, from many the parks and lakes for hiking, boating and fishing to the abundance of dining and shopping spots. Lake Mary still hosts a small town feel, right down to their weekly local farmers market.
