Lakeland, Florida is a city located in Polk county just outside of Tampa, on interstate 4 right between Orlando and Tampa which makes it so accessible. It has a population of 100, 710 according to the 2013 United States Census bureau estimates, and it is a great place to raise kids. Most of the population in Lakeland is between 16-30 years due to the number of colleges and universities in the city. Lakeland was originally home to hundreds of North American tribes and now is home to many different people from mixed races and backgrounds who live together in harmony and community cooperation. Citrus growing and phosphate mining are some of the biggest backers of the Lakeland economy, even though they do not represent the basis of Lakeland like before.
Culture of the city
Despite its relatively small size being only 133kmsq, Lakeland still maintains a deep culture and history. It possesses several historical sites such as the Dixieland Historic district, the Lake Hunter Terrace Historic District and the South Lake Morton Historic District. The city is famous for the Polk Museum of art and regularly plays host to lots of history buffs and art lovers.
Lakeland is also the venue for many events which include the annual Sun 'n FUN Fly-in where flight enthusiasts throng in to watch daring pilots perform incredible feats in the air, air races, mock dogfights etc. and swap stories, lore, take dozens of pictures and generally have fun in the Florida sun.
